Initial Crime Investigators Development Programme
Attendance criteria
This course is for trainee Detective Constables within the Detective Development Programme who have successfully completed the Serious and Complex Investigative Interviewing Skills Course and have passed the National Investigators Examination. They must have attended two mandatory training seminars prior to this course.
Course aim
To equip trainee Detective Constables with the knowledge, understanding and skills to be able to conduct professional and objective investigations, whilst maintaining an approach which recognises and acknowledges the concerns and needs of all parties involved, in accordance with the Professional Investigation Process (PIP) Level 2 and National Occupational Standards.
Course objectives
The student will be able to:
- Explain the investigative process and planning required to conduct an investigation
- Apply professional standards in the workplace
- Apply the investigative mindset
- Demonstrate how to make and record decisions during an investigation
- Use information technology to support standard investigative products
- Demonstrate exhibit recording, continuity and integrity
- Use advances in forensic science to support standard investigative products
- Deal with an individual who is a potential Covert Human Intelligence Source
- Explain the role of a police Family Liaison Officer
- Effectively plan an operation and a briefing
- Deal effectively with Missing Persons
- Effectively conduct a media appeal
- Explain the principles of the Criminal Proceedings and Investigators Act 1996
- Identify the role of a surveillance loggist
- Explain the initial police response required in relation to Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy
- Identify the functions of a financial investigator and how they can assist investigations
- Demonstrate an awareness of the threat from and police response to terrorism
- Show an understanding of the issues relating to serious sexual assaults and the forensic issues specific to serious sexual offences
- Explain the work of the Public Protection Units
- Present evidence in court
- Use Major Incident Room procedures
- Demonstrate the investigation skills essential in the early stages of a major crime investigation
