Leadership Academy Coaching Scheme

The Leadership Academy is pleased to announce the continuing success of their Coaching Programme.

Aim

The aim of Leadership Academy Coaching Scheme is to support learning and increase leadership capability of all MPS staff.

What does this mean?

It means the Leadership coaches use a combination of active listening, focused questioning and feedback in order to help the coachees gain insight and find possible solutions. They enable coachees to identify current performance levels in relation to an agreed goal, create timed actions and improve performance in order to ensure the goal is attained.

What is coaching?

Coaching is unlocking a person's potential to maximise their own performance.  It is helping them learn rather than teaching them.  (Whitmore. 2000).

How the coaching programme works?

Coaches

  • The opportunity to become an MPS coach is open to all police officers and police staff  who have line management experience and leadership  training.
  • The pre-requisite for becoming a coach is that you must have experience of being  coached.
  • There is an application and selection process - line managers support is required.
  • 6 month structured MPS coaching programme:
  • 4-day coaching internal training programme
  • 3 supervision and skills update days
  • 1 review/evaluation of coaching practice
  • 20 coaching hours recorded
  • Attendance at coaching master classes
  • Coaching support/supervision
  • Adherence to the EMCC and MPS code of ethics.

Coachees

  • The opportunity to be coached is open to all MPS staff .
  • There is an application process - line managers support is required.

Coaching scheme structure

  • Coaching scheme lasts for a maximum of 6 sessions
  • Coachees are paired up with their coaches (geographical location taken into consideration to minimise travelling)
  • Coaching sessions will last for approximately 1 hour per session.

Who is Coaching?

We currently have a database of 75 coaches consisting of police officers and police staff  at various levels across the MPS. All of our coaches have either attended external or internal Solutions Focused coaching programmes or undertaken the MPS Internal Coach Development Programme  accredited  by the prestigious European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) European Quality Standards at Practioner Level.  Additionally, our coaches regularly attend Career Professional Development Days (CPD) to enhance and develop their knowledge and skills.

Coaching Supervision (Support)

Aim

Coaching support is a formal process of professional support, which ensures continuing development of a coach and effectiveness of his/her coaching practice through interaction reflection, interpretative evaluation and the sharing of expertise.

Backhirova, Stevens and Willis (2005)

Purpose of Coaching Support

The EMCC and the MPS Code of Ethics requires that all members have regular support coaching.

All of our coaches undergo Reflective Coaching Supervision Sessions as a developmental process, with the help of a coaching supervisor. This enables us to improve the quality of the coaching we offer and enable the coaches to develop their individual coaching capacity in supporting themselves and their practice. Supervision is also a valuable source of organisational learning.

For example:  a new coach may require more frequent and stronger support/guidance.  For an experienced coach it is a 'partnership' approach to reflect and develop coaching practice.
